Do you take your teeth for granted? Most people do. Think about them and how important they are to you. Are you doing everything you can to care for them? Moore Family Dental is committed to providing you with information and tips to improve your oral health.
To get you started, let’s consider a few things you may not know about your teeth. These may just be interesting facts, but they may also be important reminders or incentives regarding how you care for your teeth.
Your teeth have enamel
Your teeth are covered with a thin layer of enamel. “This tooth shell is the hardest tissue in the human body.” Although this enamel protects your teeth in many ways, your teeth require additional protection against cavities and other problems. That’s part of the reason why you have to brush and floss at least twice a day. Regular cleanings and dental checkups help with this, too.
Your teeth are breakable
They’re very strong, but they’re not indestructible. If you use them for activities other than chewing food, you might learn that the hard way. Your teeth might seem like a handy tool to remove a tag from your new sweater, but scissors would be a lot better. Holding your keys between your teeth while you carry your shopping bags to your car might seem like a good idea, but it won’t if you trip and chip your tooth.
Your teeth can stain
If you drink red wine or coffee, these liquids can discolor your teeth. Trying to give up smoking? There are so many reasons to give it up, but you may not know that in addition to all the other ways it can hurt you, it can also discolor your teeth. A tooth may also get discolored from the inside, especially if it has a cavity. The good news is that if your teeth are discolored from food, beverages, or smoking, a whitening process can erase discoloration and make you feel like yourself again when you smile.
Your teeth don’t get completely clean when you brush them
You floss and brush until your teeth feel clean and fresh. They’re clean, right? Yes and no. They’re cleaner than they were before you brushed them, but there are still germs and other materials on them that you can’t see. Even though these germs and tiny food particles are too small to be visible to the naked eye, they are big enough to cause a problem for your teeth, in the form of cavities or decay. We can help with that. Regular cleanings make a big difference with this kind of decay and help prevent cavities. While we’re cleaning your teeth, we check your mouth to make sure there aren’t any other problems that need further investigation.
Your teeth may not last your whole life
Teeth are for a lifetime, right? Unfortunately, that’s not always true; that’s why dentures were invented. Your teeth will last a lot longer and remain a lot healthier if you take good care of them. We’re always here to help with that.
