If you live in New York State and have a child entering grade K, 2, 4, 7, or 10 you should be familiar with the school dental health certificate policy. In 2007, NYS passed a law requiring New York State public schools to ask students for a dental health certificate. Schools must also provide a list of dentists which provide free or reduced cost dental examinations.
The underlying goal of this program is to ensure the health and wellbeing of each student and to help establish a dental home. According to the New York State Education Department, “only about 50% of school aged children visit a dentist once a year”. That’s an alarming statistic for this day and age. Here are two additional factoids which support this program:
- More than 51 million school hours are lost each year because of dental-related illness
- Tooth decay remains one of the most common childhood diseases- 5 times as common as asthma
